Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has informed the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) that a 17-member special committee will be formed with the aim of amending the constitution.

He disclosed this information on Wednesday (April 29) afternoon while speaking at a session of the Jatiya Sangsad.

The Law Minister stated that the proposed committee will include 7 members from the ruling party and 5 members from independent and other parties. He also urged the opposition party to provide the names of their 5 members by next Thursday.

Regarding this, the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, informed the parliament that Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has already discussed the matter with him. However, further discussion within the opposition party is needed on this issue.

He stated that they have a ‘conceptual difference’ regarding constitutional amendment. He commented that while the opposition seeks reform, an amendment is being introduced.

The Leader of the Opposition further stated that it is not possible to make an immediate decision on this matter. A decision will be announced later after internal party discussions.
